A Kitchen Classroom on Wheels

Home economics is back -- “edible education” has officially hit the mainstream. But what about schools that want to offer cooking classes but don’t have real kitchens in their cafeterias? Or schools with real kitchens that can’t accommodate a full class of students? Now, it's time for food education to take a big leap forward.

Enter SHFT Mobile Kitchen Classroom. They're a new nonprofit building a fully-equipped teaching kitchen inside the body of a customized trailer. The SHFT Mobile Kitchen Classroom truck will travel throughout New York City, providing high school students with the opportunity to learn basic cooking skills and prepare simple, delicious, and healthy meals.

They're piloting their program at Bard High School Early College in the Lower East Side by building a new school garden and teaching 10th graders about cooking, gardening, nutrition, and food politics. And the main event -- their truck -- is slated to hit the road in early 2013.
