January 2023 has officially come to a close, which means it’s time to round up your favorite meals (and drinks!) from the past month. From cozy soups and stews galore to bright, citrusy cakes, we reached peak winter cooking in January. In no particular order, here are last month’s 10 most popular new recipes.
Ricotta cheese adds an extra layer of richness to this super-simple snacking cake. Pair it with your afternoon coffee or tea for a sweet treat, or eat it any time of day your heart desires.
This creamy, comforting chowder uses umami-rich mushrooms instead of clams—meaning it’s deeply satisfying and can easily become vegetarian-friendly. The mushroom “bacon” is a can't-miss because it gives this dish some added crunch.
This chocolatey oatmeal uses a brilliant trick to streamline the cooking (and cleaning) process. Recipe developer Samantha Seneviratne found that oatmeal cooked faster—and left less sticky residue to clean—when she used a nonstick skillet rather than a standard pot.
This spicy, cheesy stew is exactly what we want to be eating on chilly winter nights. Because it does require quite a long time to cook, this recipe is the ideal weekend project for when you’d rather not leave the house.
Here we have another citrus cake, this time featuring the fresh flavors of grapefruit and tarragon. The combination of cake flour and cornmeal results in the ultimate fluffy, tender crumb, while the upside-down technique gives the cake a caramelized topping.
As the name of this hearty chili suggests, it includes three different types of beans: scarlet runner, Rio Zape, and buckeye. The result is a super hearty and nourishing vegetarian main. You won’t miss the meat (we promise).
This refreshing slaw, which takes inspiration from Burmese thokes, or salads, is equal parts spicy, savory, sweet, funky, and sour. However, it’s the shower of onions—fried over low heat until their flavor is ultra concentrated—that really completes the dish.
Rick Martinez’s Italian Wedding Soup is the fourth soup-slash-stew to make our list. This one has the comforting vibes of chicken noodle soup thanks to its chicken broth base and ditalini pasta, plus pork meatballs.
Damp January was the perfect occasion to try this ultra-citrusy, low-ABV cocktail from John deBary. In addition to its namesake blood orange juice, this bev incorporates lemon soda, meyer lemon juice, and citrus-infused honey.
Here, burritos get a non-traditional, vegan twist from Rick Martinez with homemade hummus, harissa- and za’atar-roasted carrots, and herby tahini.
