The conceit of this recipe is simple, and hopefully applicable to people other than me. Picture this: you'd like to make yourself a nice Old Fashioned, but there is no sugar cube to be found in your pantry nor simple syrup in your fridge. When I found myself in this predicament, maple syrup was the obvious substitute. I enjoyed it so much that it has become a home bar standard for me. Since then, I’ve played around with the bitters, introducing maple (of course) and orange bitters to the party, but there is nothing wrong with sticking to classic Angostura.
Ingredients
- 1 teaspoon or barspoon of good maple syrup
- 3 dash of maple bitters, such as Runamok
- 2 dash orange bitters
- 2 ounce bourbon
- orange peel for garnish
