There is no better way to make friends than to show up somewhere with chocolate cookies. That is why I was so excited to see Deep Chocolate Cookies with Milk Chocolate Chips, which combines two forms of chocolate and a very straightforward technique.

But then I read the head note, which spoke of orange and chocolate, before moving on to the orange-free recipe and I confess I was distracted, sort of the way one might be if promised an evening at a rom-com and then removed to the opera.

But then something funny happened: I realized I was out of vanilla, and substituted an equal amount of Grand Marnier in this recipe, which offered a very subtle hint of orange to this exciting little batch of dough. It is bread-like, in fact, in your mixer, but do not be alarmed. My cookies took closer to 12 minutes to bake so just be aware. Bring them to work. People will overlook you blowing deadlines.

Makes 36 cookies

1/2 cup unsalted butter
3/4 cups sugar
1 tablespoon molasses
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 1/3 cup all-purpose flour
3/4 teaspoons baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons natural (not Dutch processed) cocoa powder
3/4 cups milk chocolate chips
