The Pie Shake: Where the Last Slice Goes to Heaven

There's no such thing as leftover pie when there's pie shakes.

I've rarely met leftover pie.

More often, it's the last slice that no one is audacious enough to take—or it's the pie that didn't come out quite as good as everyone wanted.

The solution to these "problems" is the pie shake—pie. shake.—which is exactly what you think it is. It goes like this: 1 slice of pie, 2 scoops of ice cream, a swig of milk. Blend.

I first learned about this dessert/drink at Chile Pies in San Francisco (R.I.P.), where you could turn any of their pies into a shake. Hill Country Chicken and Shake Shack are hip to the pie shake, too.

Is it ridiculous? Maybe. Is it better than pie à la mode? Definitely. You might even start sacrificing perfectly good slices for the sake of crust, cream, and pie filling in one.

There are a few things to consider when you're ready to shake it:

-Will you add booze?
-Will you use a straw or a spoon?
-What pie + ice cream combo will you go for?

These are all personal decisions you'll need to confer with yourself about. But, for some inspiration, we've dreamed up shake flavors using recipes resident pie whisperer Erin McDowell posted this week. They're all other sweets in pie form, so you could say these shakes are the ultimate circle of sugar life—dessert turned into a pie turned into a shake. You're welcome.
