If you're fortunate enough to find yourself with a glut of asparagus, a few bins of blueberries, or so many strawberries no amount of pie or cake would make a dent: Pickling's the answer. A bit of brine does wonders for preserving the season. The basic preserving tenets are simple, too: Vinegar, water, sugar, and a thing to pickle. That's it. Which means, in the time it takes to say, "Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers" five times fast, you're well on your way to enjoying watermelon rinds in January.
